Transportation Coupon Program

What is the Transportation Coupon Program?

The Transportation Coupon Program was created by MCH to help expand the transportation options available to people with disabilities in its service area. The program uses grant money from the federal government, as well as some local funding to subsidize transportation from taxis and local providers by a reduction of 50%.

What does the coupon program do?

The Transportation Coupon Program empowers people when they are able to use their coupon credits to arrange transportation for any purpose. Coupon credits can be used to go visit friends, go shopping, go to religious services or any other reason you can think of! The program was designed to give individuals with disabilities more freedom in arranging their own transportation and going where they wanted and needed to go in hopes of living a happy, healthy and socialized life.

How does the coupon program work?

Approved applicants can purchase coupon credits at a cost of 50% of their face value. The face value of each coupon credit is one dollar and credits can be purchased from the MCH administrative office directly by mailing in a check or money order. The amount received from the participant will then be doubled in value and placed on account for participant to use. Credits do not expire and are redeemed at full face value, just like cash, when the ride is requested from the transportation provider. Therefore, the actual cost of the ride using the Transportation Coupon Program is equal to half the cost of the normal taxi rate! Coupon credits can only be used for transportation and only from approved transportation providers.

Who is eligible?

Eligibility for this program is based on disability as defined by the Americans with Disability Act (ADA). According to the ADA, "Disability means, with respect to an individual, a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of such individual; a record of such impairment; or being regarded as having such an impairment". This disability could be permanent or temporary; we encourage all individuals with a disability to apply.
